Top Hits of 1983

In 1983, Police scored the last of their five No. 1 singles and albums with “Every Breath You Take” and “Synchronicity”. Michael Jackson’s biggest and Grammy-award winning album “Thriller” stayed 37 weeks in the top chart. “Billie Jean” the first single from the album became a big hit. His video “Beat It” with 130 extras and costing $70,000 joined “Billie Jean” in the top 5. Non-american artists make waves, such as “Down Under” by Australia’s Men At Work and “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Welsh songstress Bonnie Tyler. The most successful soundtrack single was “Flashdance” by Irene Cara. The new British invasion had begun, and by March, one third of the Hot 100 records were British. Toto, who scored their biggest hit “Africa” won a record five Grammys. The Police performed in front of 70,000 in Shea Stadium and Run DMC and L.L. Cool J. headlined a controversial rap tour. Simon & Garfunkel started a reunion tour and Diana Ross staged a free show at Central Park. Compact discs were first sold in record stores and Karen Carpenter died of heartbeat irregularities caused by anorexia nervosa.
