Top Hits of 1985

In 1985, Madonna was at the height of her career, with “Like A Virgin” topping the US single and album charts.    She was the first female singer to head both charts simultaneously.  Tina Turner won 4 Grammy Awards.  Prince received a record 10 American Music Awards, and other Brit winners include Paul Young, Alison Moret and Wham!  Anglo-American rock group Foreigner had their top hit “I Want To Know What Love Is” (a ballad) from Agent Provocateur, their sixth successive US Top 10 Album.   Wham! was the first western Pop group to play in China and have records released there.  A galaxy of top American artists recorded “We Are The World” under the name USA For Africa.  Two tribute records to Marvin Gaye were simultaneous hits: “Nightshift” by the Commodores and “Missing You” by Diana Ross.

1985 was the year many stars actively became involved in charity work, raising money for deserving causes.  Rock music’s greatest live show, Live Aid was staged in both London and Philadelphia.  Artists who died this year included 1950’s idol Ricky Nelson, orchestra leader Nelson Riddle and Ian Stewart who is an original Rolling Stone.
