Top Hits of 1986

In 1986, Lionel Richei’s “Say You, Say Me” gave him a record 9th No. 1 song in the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.  It was composed for the film White Nights, but was not included in the soundtrack but appeared instead in the Dancing on the Ceiling album.    James Brown had his biggest and last major hit “Living in America”.  Sade won the Grammy for Best New Act.  Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald only met after they had successfully recorded and made the video for the aptly titled “On My Own”, a top hit.  Janet Jackson became the youngest singer to top the album charts.   Whitney Houston was in the top list for the first time with the remake of George Benson’s “Greatest Love of All”.

1986 was the year cassette singles first outsold the 7-inch vinyl.  Aerosmith and Run D.M.C.  combined heavy metal with rap to “Walk This Way”, and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducted its first honorees, and chose Cleveland as its home.
