Top Hits of 1988

In 1988, George Michael’s “One More Try” made him the first artist in the rock era to have the No. 1 song of the year for two years running. He also had another hit in “Father Figure”. Whitney Houston became the first artist to sell five million of her two debut albums, and “So Emotional” gave producer Narada Michael Walden his fourth top hit in nine months. Whitney Houston became the first artist in history to score seven successive No. 1 singles. The 17-year old Debbie Gibson became the first teenager to write, produce and sing on a U.S. No. 1 hit. British singer Rick Astley made his chart debut with “Never Gonna Give You Up”. Guns N’ Roses first chart entry and only chart-topping single “Sweet Child O’ Mine” was inspired by Erin Everly, the girlfriend of Axl Rose when he wrote the lyrics.

1988 was the year that the Grammy Awards became controversial because there were no awards for rap, hard rock or heavy metal and the Best Female Rock award had been dropped. The year’s winners included U2, Sting, Paul Simon and Jody Watley. Cher won an Oscar the day before Sonny was elected Mayor of Palm Springs. The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Motown records was bought by MCA for $61 million. Andy Gibb died at age 30.
