Top Hits of 1989

In 1989, the New Kids on the Block were the latest teen idols and Donny Osmond made a surprising comeback with the hits song “Soldier of Love.” Bobby Brown had five singles included in the top hit of 1989: “My Prerogative”, “On Our Own”, “Every Little Step”, “Roni” and Rock Wit’cha”. The lyrics of “My Prerogative” are about breaking away from his former managers and New Edition, and a response to false rumors about drug use. Milli Vanilli will be remembered as the guys who were not really Milli Vanilli. Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much” topped the Hot 100 for four weeks and was her biggest chart single until “That’s The Way Love Goes”. Bette Middler made a dramatic return to the top hits with a song form the soundtrack of her film Beaches “Wind Beneath My Wings.” It revitalized her recording career and won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

1989 was the year that the progressive rock band Jethro Tull’s winning the first Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Grammy, and white pop star George Michael winning the American Music Awards for Top R&B Male and Top R&B albums were controversial. For the first time over half the Top 10 black albums were by rap artists. Billboard introduced an all-rap chart, and MTV banned NWA’s “Straight Outta Compton” video for being too “pro-gang”.
