Top Hits of 1991

In 1991, Bryan Adams became the first Canadian to have a No. 1 single since Percy Faith’s “Theme From A Summer Place”. The song was the theme of the movie “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”. Timmy T produced “One More Try” for only $200, but became a chart-topping single. Grammy-winning Mariah Carey, whose “Someday” was her third successive No. 1, with all three hits coming from her chart topping eponymous album. Whitney Houston equaled Madonna’s female record of nine No. 1. Janet Jackson became the first artist to score seven Top 5 singles from one album. Session singer Yvette Marine claimed she had sung lead on some Paula Abdul trucks, but this did not affect Abdul’s sales as “Rush Rush” hit the top. C+C Music Factory also had legal troubles as they were sued by former Weather Girl Martha Wash who belted out the refrain “Everybody dance now!” but her name didn’t appear in the credits. R.E.M. won a record six MTV awards including Best Video for “Losing My Religion”. 1991 was the year Freddie Mercury of Queen announced that he had AIDS then died the next day, Whitney Houston’s “The Star Spangled Banner” received a chart boost because of the Gulf War.
