Music Lists - Classical Music

  1. Rachmaninoff No. 3 - full of Russian romantic themes and showcases the pianist's virtousity.  Not very accessible at first, but grows on you.  The final movement is especially robust.  Highly recommended if you want to be awed by the pianist's keyboard wizardry as well as his heart.
  2. Beethvoven No. 5 (Emperor) - from the opening bar, everything is exhilirating and grand.
  3. Tchaikovsky No. 1 - the old romantic warhorse, plenty of big tunes and virtuosity.
  4. Brahms No. 2 - a symphony with piano accompaniment.  Very thick orchestral texture, as always with Brahms.
  5. Mozart No. 20 - dramatic and delightful as only Mozart can dish it out.
  6. Mozart No. 21 - the slow movement (Elvira Madigan theme) is one of the most beautiful melody.
  7. Rachmaninoff No. 2 - the beautiful music just soars.  The third movement's main theme is deservedly very popular because it makes you want to swoon.
  8. Grieg - another romantic warhorse, full of melodious themes with norweigian flavor.
  9. Bach No. 2 - (actually for harpsichord but often played for piano) for those who love polyphony, the slow movement is especially moving.
  10. Chopin No. 2 - if only for the poetic slow movement.  The rest makes you love piano music as only Chopin can.
