  1.  As Good as it Gets – an Obsessive Compulsive antisocial person (Jack Nicholson) becomes drawn into the lives of his favorite waitress (Helen Hunt) and gay neighbor (Grey Kinnear). Along the way, almost reluctantly, he becomes human.  Funny and sad at times, the dialogues are great.
  2. The Apartment – a classic, black and white romantic comedy-drama with a lot of heart.  One of Jack Lemmon’s – one of the last century’s best comedy actors – best performance as an ambitious employee who gets promoted by loaning his apartment to company executives for their extra-marital affairs.  Complications arise when he falls in love with his boss’ mistress, Shirley McLane.
  3. When Harry Met Sally – Two friends played by Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal who meet at various stages of their lives (they don’t even like each other at first), try to avoid romantic attachment in vain.  Great witty dialogue and the restaurant scene is a classic.
  4. You’ve Got Mail – Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan with perfect chemistry! Tom is the owner of a superstore chain of bookstores who’s coming to put Meg’s neighborhood bookstore out of business. They hate each other, but unknown to them, they are the best of friends in cyberspace.
  5. There's Something About Mary – a good, offensive (to many people, at least) romantic comedy (I like my comedy with a little “edge”). Ben Stiller is a loser who never forgot the love of her life, Cameron Diaz, and persistently pursues her, despite the machinations of Matt Dillon, a detective, who also developed the hots for her. Memorable scenes: the one with the zipper and the hair gel.
  6. Annie Hall – Love story of two neurotics, Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. A New York Jewish comedian falls in love with a singer. Woody Allen’s self-deprecating humor and funny-intelligent musings are irresistible.
  7. Shakespeare In Love – Surprisingly entertaining period love story about a fictional Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) who falls in love with Gwynette Paltrow and how it affects his writing of Romeo and Juliet.  The script is witty and smart and has a lot of in-jokes for Shakespeare fans.
  8. Clueless – Very funny Emma adaptation starring a perfectly cast Alicia Silverstone as a dim makeover girl and matchmaker to her friends.  Alicia is amazing as a Beverly Hills teen of the 90’s with a shallow and materialistic lifestyle.
  9. Roxanne – A modern retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, about the guy who is smart but suffers from inferiority complex because of his enormous nose. He had to front for another guy to court the woman he loves. Steve Martin is a delight.
  10. Overboard – A spoiled heiress (Goldie Hawn) treats a carpenter (Kurt Russell) with contempt.  When Goldie falls overboard a yacht and has amnesia, Kurt picks her up and exacts revenge on her by making her his slave-wife. In the end, they fall in love, of course. Cute romantic situation.
  11. The Goodbye Girl - Based on a Neil Simon play, the humor is mainly in the witty dialogue when a dumped divorcee, Marsha Mason, clashes with an off-Broadway actor who rents a room in her apartment. Richard Dreyfus is great here! His gay humpbacked Richard III is too funny!
  12. Something’s Gotta Give – this is the romantic comedy for seniors, but fun and entertaining nevertheless.  Jack Nicholson is a “dirty old man” who, after having a heart attack, falls in love with his young lover’s mother.  Diane Keaton is terrific too!
  13. The American President – A blend of romance and politics involving an American President and a lobbyist.  Michael Douglas stars as an ideal widower president pursuing Annette Benning.   Intelligent script from the West Wing creator, Aaron Sorkin.
  14. Moonstruck – A gem of a love story revolving around an American-Italian family.  Cher is a widow who is about to marry an older man, but falls in love with the man’s younger brother, Nicolas Cage.  Funny moments are not forced, but arise from the characters’ quirky personalities.
  15. Wedding Crashers – this is one of the funniest I’ve seen in years, comedy or otherwise.  Two friends crash weddings and eventually fall in love with the bridesmaids – a situation that threatens their bachelorhood and friendship.  It’s raunchy and full of hilarious plot twists.
  16. Bridget Jones Diary – Funny misadventure of a bumbling 32-year-old single woman who is on the portly side.  Renee Zellwegger plays the woman torn between the love of a charming jerk (Hugh Grant) and a snob (Colin Firth).  Lots of hilarious scenes.
  17. The 40 Year Old Virgin – the title says it all.  Funny scenes include being coached by friends on how to lose his virginity and find true love, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed.
  18. Can’t Buy Me Love – Patrick Dempsey, a nerd who stumbles into money, hires a heartthrob to be his girlfriend.  He becomes popular, but realizes how true the title of the movie is.
  19. While You Were Sleeping – Sandra Bullock, a lonely transit worker, saves her dream man who fell into a coma, and passes herself off as the man’s fiancée. She becomes a part of the man's family and is having a great time, until she meets the man’s brother, and the man starts to wake up. Sandra is very effective as a sweet girl-next-door.
  20. It Happened One Night – a classic, one of the earliest movie to win an Oscar – and it’s a romantic comedy!  Mismatched pair Clark Gable, a reporter, and Claudine Colbert, a runaway heiress, meet on a bus, bicker, and somehow fall in love and tear down the “Wall of Jericho.”
