Heavy Metal is a style of rock music characterized by aggressive, distorted guitar solos, heavy drums, pulsing bass, and vigorous vocals. It is more brutal than hard rock, louder, and without the blues music influence. Often the lyrics have satanic, devil, morbid, black magic, and fantasy references. Heavy metal performers are known for their theatricality and showmanship (from rhythmically beating time with the head or head banging to smashing guitars while performing). Music critics used to hate heavy metal music.
Heavy metal originated from the hard rock of the late 1960s and early 1970s and was performed by groups such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. It became popular again in the late 1980s. Heavy-metal bands formed in the 1970s and 1980s include Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Guns n' Roses.
