Jay-Z raps about billionaires and poor  people.  It’s hip-hop, so there’s braggadocio, but it’s also reflective and suggests vulnerability.  Includes the radio hits “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” and “Girls, Girls, Girls”.

Arcade Fire’s striking debut as an indie rock band is a magical-realist story of young lovers trying to escape the memories of their family.  It is theatrical, intense, melancholic and athmospheric.

Johnny Cash, the country music titan,  is mainly working from other artist’s song like Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt”, and Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” , but he makes them his own through his trademark solemn timbre and moving delivery.

The relaxed and minimalist music of this pop rock hit album from this British quartet are soulful and captivating.  Rock swooners include “In My Place” and “The Scientist”

This brilliant album, inspired by short wave transmissions, creates a sonic world that suggests crossed signals and vast distances.  It is psychedelia with great lyrics that grows on you.
