In the 1990’s, the most dominant genres are R&B and rap, with artists like Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Coolio, and Mase making top hits, as well as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.  Pop, specifically teen pop and dance pop continue to be very popular. American teen pop singers like the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, 98 degrees, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Destiny’s Child, were some of the pop idols of the 90s, as well as the British girl group The Spice Girls.  Michael Jackson continued to reap critical and commercial success.  Many grunge and alternative rock bands became commercially successful, such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Jane’s Addiction, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Also, R.E.M. became one of the most popular band in the world.

1990 Oldies Music History in a Nutshell

In 1990, two different songs with the same title “Hold On” introduced the world to two of the early 1990’s top acts, En Vogue and Wilson Philips. Grammy winner Sinead O’ Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” topped the single and album charts respectively – the first Irish female to reach the U.S. No. 1 spot. M.C. Hammer’s “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em” topped the album chart for 21 weeks. New Kids On The Block, who had three of the Top 4 US music videos, signed a $10 million sponsorship contract with McDonalds. Madonna chalked up her 20th US Top 10 single in 6 years. The year ended with Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” becoming rap’s first No. 1. 1990 was the year the world found out that Milli Vanilli didn’t sing, MTV banned Madonna’s “Justify My Love”, guitar hero Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash, and soul giant Curtis Mayfield was paralyzed after a lighting rack fell on him during a show.
