In 1981, John Lennon who was murdered the previous year had 3 top hits, “(Just Like) Starting Over” from his comeback album “Double Fantasy”, “Woman” and “Watching the Wheels”.  Blondie’s “Rapture” brought rap back to the forefront of pop music.  Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” was used to welcome home the American hostages held in Iran for 444 days.  Bob Marley, the world’s most popular reggae artist died of cancer.  Bill Haley died in Texas.  Daryl Hall & John Oates, who became the most successful duo in the rock era, scored their first hit with “Kiss On My List”.   Queen’s “Greatest Hits” became one of the most successful albums of all time.  Sony’s Walkman cassette players enjoyed popularity.  MTV first appeared , and the top 40 audiences declined.  The compact disk (CD) became available, and eventually replaced vinyl.
