Top Hits of 1982

In 1982, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky IV was the fourth hit song that came directly from a soundtrack.  Stevie Wonder partnered with Paul McCartney on “Ebony and Ivory”, a song that’s supposed to tell people of all ages to “live together”.  Joan Jett had a hit debut in “I Love Rock n’ Roll” as a protest against Rolling Stones’ “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It)”.  John Mellencamp, who was renamed by his first manager as John Cougar, was the first American male solo artist to have two songs in the top 10 since Elvis Presley.  “Abracadabra” is Steve Miller’s most successful chart single of all time.  Rock videos came of age as MTV gained importance and many clubs added video screens.  Album-oriented rock ruled the American album charts, rap continued to be popular, and synth-rock started to thrive.
