Top Hits of 1987

In 1987, Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” was a top hit, as well as a Grammy Award winner. It was produced by Narada Michael Walden, who was also responsible for another hit, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” by Starship. Whitney became the first album to enter both the US and UK charts at No. 1. Revivals of two hits by Tommy James & The Shondells followed each other at the top: “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany and “Mony Mony” by Billy Idol. Madonna scored another big hit with “La Isla Bonita”. Huey Lewis & The News scored their third and last U.S. No. 1 hit with “Jacob’s Ladder”. Michael Jackson’s first album since 1982, Bad, shipped a record 2.25 million copies in the U.S. and sold a record 380,000 in its first week in the U.K. U2 had their American breakthrough in The Joshua Tree. The Dirty Dancing soundtrack topped the US album chart for 18 weeks. Paul Simon picked up a Grammy for Album of the Year for Graceland.

1987 was the year the Beatles’ album were first released on compact disc. The DAT (digital audio tapes) and CDV (compact disk videos) machine would soon be in the market, but it never caught on.
